Why explore a career in an independent media agency?

After 25 years in the industry—spanning a range of media agencies, intermediaries, and even a stint publisher-side—it feels like I’ve seen the media world from a few angles. And yet, I find myself back in the world of independent agencies. Either I’m a glutton for punishment, or it genuinely is a rewarding career experience.

The best independent agencies have a unique energy about them. If you’re at the start of your career, you’ll find an environment that’s collaborative and full of opportunities to grow. You’re likely to be given the chance to get involved in real projects, learn from senior team members, and build confidence in your skills.

There’s also something to be said for variety. Being part of a large network can make it more likely that you’ll be boxed into one narrow role. But if you’re naturally curious and want to explore different aspects of media, then these more nimble environments will let you develop skills beyond your immediate job description and contribute your ideas. It’s a great way to learn, especially when you’re newer to the industry.

For me, as client commercial director at the7stars, one of the things I enjoy most is the fact that I work across all our clients, across a huge range of sizes and sectors, which keeps my role interesting and dynamic. Every day really is different. And because of the ethos and culture here, I often feel that I’m genuinely doing the best thing for my clients—finding win-win solutions without the pressures of corporate shareholders or rigid hierarchies getting in the way.

That same freedom filters down to everyone in the agency. At the7stars, if you see a way to add value or make a process better, you’re encouraged to jump in and make it happen. It’s made clear to all the teams that this is a place where your ideas are heard and your contributions matter, no matter your role or seniority. That’s not a feeling I remember having as part of a large, global machine.

For balance, I should say that the independence and variety come with their own set of expectations. Yes, you’ll be given autonomy and trust, but with that comes responsibility. It’s not always a place where you can wait to be told what to do, so people who prefer a lot of direction and structure may find it challenging.

But if you're someone that thrives on rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in, it can be an incredibly rewarding environment.

Ultimately, working in an independent media agency is about diversity of experience, and the chance to make a real difference. For anyone looking to start their career or take it in a new direction, it’s an exciting choice that offers the opportunity to contribute and be part of something meaningful... one that I'd highly recommend!
